Wanda Ventham in "Blood Beast Terror"

Marc Martin-2
Not too long ago Lieve mentioned a movie featuring Wanda Ventham and
Peter Cushing. This movie was "Blood Beast Terror", and was made in
1967. I have this on video, and I must say it's not a very good
movie. Also, although Wanda Ventham has 3rd billing, her part is not
that big. She does have a nice flirtatious quality that Kent might
like, however. :-)

Here's an example:

http://ufo.simplenet.com/temp/blood.mov

Someday I'll get around to putting up a "UFO Cast Before & After"
page for this movie...

Marc, I can't view this MOV! It says it's a bad file. First it was the Apex, now you're taunting me with Wanda! Are you trying to kill me? I tried to download it, and view it from it's current location. Neither worked. Ahhhhhhhh!

Hmmmm.... works here... perhaps it requires Quicktime 4 to view? Are
you using Quicktime 4?

I'm not sure what version it is. I tried it on Quicktime, Realplayer and Movieplayer. I'll be back in a bit...

I was able to view the file and I'm still using QuickTime 3. Weren't there
a bunch of horror stories with installing QuickTime 4 and it wreaking havoc
on certain northern European computer systems?

Nice little clip, I'm sure this film is out on video isn't it? Maybe from
one of those cheapo old horror film vendors?

You know, I'm pissed with Quicktime - it screwed up my Netscape MIDI
player royally and so now all web pages with MIDI are AWFUL!

Poor Kent, though. <pat pat> I am downloading the movie now, so don't
know yet if I can view it or not.

Oh, and Phil wrote:

Yeah, screwed me up, like I said. I installed a new MIDI player for
Netscape? And when I'm OFF-LINE, MIDIs play on Crescendo and play
perfectly fine, but ON-LINE, Netscape insists on using Quicktime and
MIDIs come out AWFUL - can't understand it .....

BTW Kent, I think you can still buy the Apex DVD player with the
secret menu. I've just been browsing the Apex discussion forums, and
there are people who bought theirs within the last 2 days from
Circuit City that still have it. Apparently, Circuit City's claim
that the units have been changed are false!

And if not, you can always just return it...

Here's the Apex DVD player web page: http://64.45.6.252/apex/index.html

(this player is significant because it will allow us folks in America
to watch all of those cool Carlton ITC DVD's about to be released in
the UK...perhaps even someday UFO!)

Really?! I've gotta do some phoning at lunch. But when I did call Circuit City a few weeks ago, they said they didn't even have any in stock. They'd have to order it for me, and it would take a few weeks. And it wouldn't have the "special feature" I wonder if they haven't changed them yet, and maybe legally they have to say they've been fixed. Or maybe neutered is a better word...

When I bought mine several months ago, they had none in stock as
well, and I had to special order mine. But it showed up within
a week.

Well, I just called ALL the Circuit City stores in the state. A few have them, most don't. And they all said that the new ones were completely remodeled. And it's a felony offense? to sell the old ones. They sure completely remodeled them awfully fast. A guy at one of the stores seemed sympathetic. He said it was a bummer that you can't get the original anymore. He also said there's a brand on sale at EBAY that has the same feature. He couldn't remember the name, only that it started with an R. All I could find was one called Raite. But it doesn't mention the coding.

Ahh! I'm really tempted to go get one at Circuit City. You really think the're the same machine?! I see there's lots of them on EBAY going from $185.00 up to $500.00!

Since when did anyone ever believe what a salesman had to say...
especially one from Circuit City?!! :-)

All I know is that I've read several posts from people who've bought
this machine in the last week, and the secret menu is still there,
despite the salespeople insisting that it's not. And some people
who initially reported that the menu wasn't there came back and said
it was, they just didn't follow the instructions closely enough
the first time.

Also note that J&R Music World sells this machine for $199 (no tax),
and it's also in stock:

If only I had the money <siiiiiiiigh>

Hey, I can't view that movie either. It is 2.76 MB and it loads okay and
I push the play button and the bar moves, but NOTHING plays - no sound,
no picture. <shrug> No biggie for me, as I'm not a big Wanda fan, but
<shrug> Better get that fixed before you come out with an Ed or Mike
clip!!!! <glare>

Thanks for the link to J&R music world Marc, I am seriously considering
buying the machine and the page on J&R says it plays all formats. I also
prefer to buy from someone other than Circuit City, the first and last time
we bought there , there was a 15% restocking fee on all returns! Hence I
tend to avid them now.

Now, I've talked to my nephew about the machines (HE also says there's
another brand, Shinko 8320 that does this as well) and he says it will play
the PAL disks but there will still need to be a PAL to NTSC converter
between the player and the TV. Has anyone tested this out on a PAL DVD yet?
Even so, it might be worth getting since Carlton seems to be beginning to
release the Anderson shows on DVD and the price should be lower than buying
box sets from Japan.

Also I think some of the Babylon 5 movies (In the Beginning, Thirdspace,
River of Souls etc) have been released in the UK on DVD AND in WIDESCREEN
format!

Now for me that's another great reason for getting the machine and if
necessary a converter. (Eric says a converter is about $80)

Re: the Apex DVD player

Keith Carpenter

You've may have heard all the good stuff about the APEX:
Region free, disabled Macrovision, VCD and MP3 capability.
It's really a bargain for all these features.

Here's the bad news...
The APEX is a relatively cheap DVD player. A number of people have
had to return their units because of various quality problems. I've
been lucky here. There are 2 well known deficiencies: RF interference
from the power supply and poor cooling of the DSP (main processor).
I've added ferrite filters to the cords to suppress the RF and plan on
adding a heatsink to the DSP. I see the APEX as a hobby project.

Many have complained of problems with specific discs. I personally
found the 6th Sense to switch from WS to P&S consistently at the same
section of the movie. The 6th Sense is one of the newer "anamorphic"
(WS or P&S is software selectable) DVDs. Minor nuisance? Maybe, but
it's enough that I don't plan on dumping my old DVD player just yet.

There are several APEX clones out there. The APEX got all attention.
Try looking for the RAITE AV715.

As I had mentioned previously, I tested a region 2 PAL disk on my NTSC
TV. Played perfectly. No NTSC/PAL converter is necessary. You simply
configure the APEX for the type of TV you are using. You should be able
to play NTSC discs on a PAL TV.

I had the same problem. The bar moved, but no movie. That's why I wondered if it was a bad file. But I downloaded Qicktime 4, and it worked fine.
And by the way, I went to buy my Apex tonight at a Circuit City that had them in stock, and they were out! So I had to pay for one there that was in stock at a different outlet (Southcenter, Marc) And I don't have time to run down there until...Saturday?!! I may have to leave work for a while tomorrow morning...yeah, that's the ticket. For those who've never been to Seattle, trying to drive from the north end down to the south end and back in the afternoon can take what... FOUR HOURS?!! As long as there's no game. Then it would take considerably longer... :-(

Well, I'm pretty sure I have QT4, although, I may have tried to
UNINSTALL it after it screwed up my system, which didn't help, so don't
know if I went ahead and reinstalled it or not? <boggle>

What?!! I have Quicktime & Netscape on 3 computers (one at work, one
my wifes), and have no problems.

If when attempting to play this movie you just get a white screen and
no sound, I think that means you are using the player or plugin that
came with Quicktime version 2. You're not seeing/hearing anything
because I'm using video/audio formats that were introduced in version
3.
