UFO Bloopers

Hi Marc,

just reading your site and came across this:

"In IDENTIFIED, Lt. Ford tells Straker that he's been with SHADO for two years. Yet, during a flashback in CONFETTI CHECK A-OK, we see that he was with SHADO ten years ago!"

Which (exact) flashback do you refer to there?

That would be near the end of the episode, in Nina Barry's apartment:

Hi Marc,

thanks for the info, and yes, it would mean that this is no blooper.

The scene in the apartment took place roughly 2-3 years prior to "full functionality of SHADO" and the day/night prior to Straker's son being born. If you put Identified at 1980, which is where it belongs I'd say, then indeed it should be correct what Ford says. Especially if he doesn't spell out the months ("two years" as opposed to e.g. "two years and X months").

Something similar could possibly be argued for the "futuristic car", as that takes place roughly 1972/1973, meaning in the relative future (of the time Confetti Check takes place and the series if filmed).

Cheers

Of course, those scenes all still look like the "1970" scenes, with the older-style clothing
and hairstyles.  Nothing like how everything looks 2 years later in 1980.

Also, how old is Straker's son in A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES?  If he was born in 1978,
then what year did that episode take place?

(there's a blooper in there somewhere, I just know it!)

It's more like 3 years later (1980 that is). As to clothing an hairstyle, there was something just as hefty happening with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in the 60ies in Europe at the time. Within weeks (younger) people looked totally different. So that I wouldn't call much of a hindrance.

> Also, how old is Straker's son in A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES?

No, he was born spring 1976 or 1977 depending. And John was 7 or 8, which makes QoP either 1983 or 1984, again depending.

I think it might be narrowed down even a bit more, but I worked a lot with the available timelines these past weeks, and that's the rough shot at it.

> (there's a blooper in there somewhere, I just know it!)

Actually I think the blooper is with Chris Bentley and his assumption that Confetti Check took place within one year after the death of the minister of defense in the Rolls. This would be totally nonsensical, but I came across that assumption several times. It is impossible to built such a huge complex within a year and the project papers themselves clarify that the rough set up takes at least 7, if not 10 years.

Um, this IS a blooper - Straker was followed to the meeting with Ford and
the others while Mary was pregnant (1971-72) - those were the incriminating
photos given to Mary before Johnny was born.

Johnny was at least 9 years old and probably closer to 10 at the time of his
death (Barnaby Shaw was about 10 at the time of filming) - so Ford had to
have been with SHADO at least for Johnny's entire lifetime. (somewhere
around 9 years at the time of Identified (1980), assuming CCAOK took place
about a year or do after Identified.)

If the meeting and Johnny's birth had been only 3 years prior - then Johnny
was 4 at the time of his death?

Wrong.

Mary was pregnant during the LAST year of SHADO's inception. More correctly, she conceived John in the summer before that final meeting (Juli) and was scheduled to have the baby in the first week of April. Straker tells Alec about the coming birth of his son during their walk on the studio grounds that winter. The meeting takes place in late spring, all the trees are in flower, the weather is spring weather as it is filmed. Whether the meeting is the last week of march or the first week of April is irrelevant. It is definitely either 1976 or 1977.

The blooper refers to Identified, and that is definitely in 1980, meaning John was 2 and half at that time. Which works just fine with him saying "two years".

No, 7 or 8. He did not necessarily die the year following Identified.

Well, SHADO had certainly come a long a way by the time
Straker's son was born.  And that would have taken many
years of planning, construction, and training.

So perhaps the real "blooper" here is that Ed and Mary's
marriage didn't really seem to have progressed by 6-7
years by the time Johnny was born.  I mean, what did they
do?  They bought a house, bought some drapes, Straker
never came home, Mary got pregnant, Mary got suspicious,
Mary had a baby.  All of this seemed to have taken
place in 1-2 years, not 6-7 years.  So there is an
inconsistency between the developments in their marriage
and the development of SHADO.

As a writer you may interpret the discrepancies as you wish.

But since Straker was wearing the same style of hair and suit during his
meeting with Henderson and Freeman's official recruitment AND immediately
following the wedding (which we know took place in 1970-71)  AND he was
wearing the same hair style during the meeting and working in HQ - the
visual cues indicate these events were probably intended to be interpreted
as being close in time.

You may choose to disagree,

But in a discrepancy like this there are at least a few possibilities for
the writer:

1:  ignore the problem - Ford never said that.

2:  explain away the 'two year' statement as something other than Ford's
total time in SHADO - perhaps his actual time in HQ rather than SHADO - or
maybe he was recruited and was doing something else before being brought
'into the fold'.

3: skew the timeline - place most or all of SHADO's building and recruitment
into a 1977-78 timeframe (7-8 years after its commissioning), and put AQoP
out to 1986-87 or so.

There are issues will all these.

A decent compromise would be for Mary to have gotten pregnant around 1974 or
75 but that still doesn't explain Ford's statement.

Putting AQoP out to 1984-85 is still bit of a stretch. Straker didn't update
his car for 5 years? *grin*

Yes, especially since we know that THE LONG SLEEP took place in 1980.

But then again, they were drinking a 1982 wine in COMPUTER AFFAIR... :-)

Re: UFO Bloopers

Hi!   My thoughts on this!  I think the champagne in Computer Affair was said to  date from 1984, although the episode itself was supposed to be set in 1981 so there is a discrepancy there.   Straker's car in Confetti-Check was , I think, a Jensen Interceptor although I am not certain, and he had the gold one when he went to see Henderson. If his 'gold' car was 'special' then he would  no doubt have kept it for years. Like Deloreans! How many classics are there that are over 25 years old? (We really  value older cars here!!)

As for Long Sleep, I  am not sure where  1980 comes from? It is set ten years after Shado started, but when was that?  Straker says in Identified  that it's been ten years, but that refers to setting up SHADO, not necessarily getting it operational. So it is quite possible that Long Sleep is set in ... 1990. ten years after  Identified. Although personally I think that is a little too advanced.

Hi,

Just to add to this... what do you make of Commander Straker's comment in 'Survival', to Nina Barry, especially in the context of timelines mentioned?

Commander Straker "Miss Barry" (interesting, and slightly dismissive as he doesn't mention Nina by rank, but does call Joan Harrington by her title - Space Tracker).
Nina Barry, "Yes, Sir."
Commander Straker, "I met your father about a month ago. I was happy to tell him I think you're settling in extremely well."
Nina Barry, "Thank you, Sir."

Considering that Nina Barry was in the original personnel meeting at 'her' apartment in 'Confetti Check A-OK' - indeed cited as the other woman by the private detective - I have always taken the above dialogue to mean that Nina Barry was new to Moonbase (NOT new to SHADO) at the time of 'Survival'. This could explain why Nina Barry was so adept and at ease in SkyDiver in 'Sub-Smash', and also explains where she had [previously been stationed prior to her being stationed on Moonbase...

But, 'Sub-Smash' was well after 'Survival'...

Ideas?

Regards,

Griff
