An alternate 'take' of the UFO theme was released a couple of years ago on a
CD overseen by the Sci Fi Channel. The name of the CD escapes me (something
like Sci Fi's Greatest Hits). The track was seemingly not the one used on
the series, but another version recorded at the same session. It will
probably appear on Fanderson's UFO soundtrack release.

Are these the originals as recorded *and* transmitted or are they
cover versions? It's a pet peeve of mine that most 'TV Theme'
albums that seem to be released seldom feature the original
recordings.

All these theme songs are the transmitted versions, not 'Geoff Love
Orchestra' style covers!
Mind you, take a look at 'What the Stuarts Did For Us' that was on BBC2 last
night and there's a wonderful Tudor version of the Doctor Who theme music!

On the Cult Royale CD, it sounds like the UFO theme track was
recorded straight off of a videotape of the show! Therefore,
if you already have the DVDs, then you already own a higher
quality version of the theme!

And of course, don't forget, you can get two versions of
the theme (with and without teletype) at:

Thanks, Grant. Looks good. I really have an immense dislike of
cover versions on TV theme albums being touted as the real thing.

Good heavens! No, mised that. I just can't imagine what it might have

This is true: the Cult Royale version *is* as transmitted, but with
all the sound effects (ie teleprinter etc). So its not a release of
the actual session tape - with just the music - but a copy of a music
track from a transmitted episode -admittedly fairly good quality when
it was released(pre UFO DVD days).

As for the other 4-CD album Grant mentions, I *think* this is a re-
release of tracks from various Silva Screen albums and I suspect that
the UFO Theme (and others such as Space 1999)is from the CULT FILES
REOPENED album, where it was arranged by Derek Wadsworth (Space 1999
Y2)and played by the City of Prague Philharmonic. I was very very
disappointed by the arrangement and the recording, especially as I
love Wadsworths Space 1999 music. I don't think its a good idea to
transcribe a tv score that was originally recorded by a fairly small
studio orchestra into something that is played by a symphony
orchestra. It might work with Thunderbirds or Space 1999 Year 1 where
the style was symphonic to start (with as intended by Barry Gray).

But scores like UFO (and for that matter Year 2 of Space 1999)tended
to be arranged for smaller rock or jazz orchestras and would have
been better arranged and recorded that way. In particular much of the
UFO score always had a jazzy sort of feel which doesn't really
translate well to a symphony orchestra - at least not to my way of
thinking - and there was something about Wadsworths arrangement which
just didn't sound 'right'. I'm not musical so I can't describe it but
I'm sure there are others who know what I mean....

Re: UFO Theme

As I think about it, I remember that Silva released an album back in
1992 (FAB- Music from the TV Shows by Barry Gray)which was performed
by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra "conducted by Konstantin Pavlov"
(oh yeah??!)

Their symphonic performances of music from Thunderbirds and Stingray
were very good: but the themes from Capt Scarlet, Joe 90, Space 1999
(Y2...which was funny for a CD supposedly focussing on Barry Gray
music)and UFO sounded frankly awful. I remember a reviewer saying
that it sounded like members of the orchestra were jerking around the
room trying to play these poppy sounding, rhythm packed themes..and
not making a very good job of it. The point he made was that it isn't
always a good idea to do symphonic arrangements out of music which
was never intended to be arranged and played for 75 players (lets be
honest if Barry Gray had wanted to do this - or had the budget - he
would have done it himself and made a far better job of it).

Being that I have have worked on soundtrack re-issues, I would almost
certainly say that The Cult Royale version of the UFO theme is a
direct dub from the 1/4" sound mags, This accounts for the good sonic
quality and the sound effects. This version is likely to be a mono
reduction from the multi-track session tapes, assuming it was recorded
on multi-track session tape in the first place, as it is a bit on the
cusp as 8 track multi-track only started to become widely available in
early '69. So it possible there may be undubbed stereo version lurking
in some tape library. It would be interesting to know if it was
recorded on multi-track tape, if there is a proper [1969] stereo mix
in existance, or if the forthcoming Fanderson version will have to
freshly mixed from the raw multi track. This is something I have been
involved in this process, so it does go on - if not always admitted
to.

Yes, that is what the company claimed as well. Although I still
have to wonder about this, as the sound quality on the DVD releases
is far cleaner.

The UFO theme was recorded on multi-track tape -- I think it might
have been 4-track. The upcoming Fanderson UFO soundtrack CD will
feature a stereo mix of these tapes. The Sci-Fi Channel CD from
a few years ago gave a sneak peak of what the quality will be like,
as original 4 track tape was mixed down to 2 stereo, but
it was horribly done, with improper levels and the wrong take.

Re: UFO Theme

lunadude2001 <russell_smith@ntlworld.com>
Marc - if it's four track it's unlikely to to be multi-track studio
tape the theme exists on. By early '69 not many studios had "proper"
multi track facilities. It is only the big boys such as EMI, Pye and
IBC, where the like of the Beatles, Kinks and Who recorded would have
had access to this sort facility - as it was new and quite expensive
method of recording, would this expense have been extended to music
from a Tv show ??

Do you know which studio the music was recorded at?. If you are right
[and I'm not disputing for one minute you are not] and it is four
track, the recording would have been built up by over dubbing direct
onto each of the channels and bouncing the effects through a
additional reel player. I don't know for sure this is how the did with
the UFO music, but this was a very common method of committing music
to tape during that period. But only minimal mixing or remixing can be
done.

Even with the big selling artists of the time, because multi-track
tape was so expensive it was not uncommon once a production master of
the mono and stereo mix had been committed to a production the master,
that that the multi-track session tape would have been erased and
re-used. This is why studio tape can't be accessed for remastering for
re-issues - it simply dos'nt exist any more. I have done a lot of tape
research down the years in amazing how many times this sitution exists
even with quite prominant artists. Now! if itwas privately funded
project and part of the deal was owner ship of ownership of the studio
tape, I guess it could still be around.

Knowing how the industry worked back then, and further knowing that
the music was going to be added to a Tv programme and could have ever
been needed in mono. I have serious doubts that they would have gone
to the considerable expense of producing a proper stereo mix, unless
there was a serious intention of releasing a soundtrack album, you
will obviously know if that was ever a serious proposal. But it is
entirley like that a guide stereo mix would have been done in the
studio, before the mono reduction was completed and maybe that's what
you have heard? From what you say "improper levels" it appears to me
thats what you have heard. If it four track the remaster engineer
should be able to correct that, but don't be fooled into believing
that is the original, because there probably was no original.

Lets say for argument sake the music was recorded on 1/2" multi-track
tape and the session tapes did still exists. It would need mixing from
scratch again, and to achieve the exact same sound as the original you
would need the engineers original cutting notes. Where as the
production masters can't be remixed as they are a fixed mix

You can get a really nice remaster from the 1/4" production master.

All interesting stuff, some speculation on part, as I'm not au-fait
with the tapes. But based on considrable experience of the recording
industry from this period.

Perhaps you might be able to answer a question that has always
puzzled me. Why is it that those who release recordings of TV
themes are so loathe to simply put out the as-broadcast themes.
Why this great fondness on the part of so many for over versions
and arrangments of the original? Do they not know that this is not
what folk want. They want the original goods.

Dav - The soundtrack I worked on was nothing to do with Sci-fi it was
sleazy British sex comedy that included music [from a major artist
from the '60 and '70's] The music on the film was different that
artist included on the soundtrack album. So on re-issuing the
soundtrack LP we wanted to include some the different mono material as
bonus tracks on the CD re-issue so maybe I'm not best placed to answer
your question.

But I suspect the answer maybe a copyright issue. When I carried out
the research for this particular soundtrack I uncovered a curious
state of affairs, in that the music on the soundtrack LP was owned
jointly between the artist and the record label in question. Yet the
music that appeared on the film although the same [but remixed to
mono for cinema release] bar a few extra incidental pieces and
different arrangements was owned by the film company, Canal +
[originally Rank] inn this particular instance althought they were
helpful in getting the music release, a separate set of clearance and
royalties applied.

I believe Barry Gray had a studio built into his basement, and
the UFO theme was recorded there. Most of the music from UFO
was recorded at "Barry Gray Studios", but some of it was also
recorded at Anvil Films Denham, some at "CTS" (?), and some
at Pye Studio 2.

And I really can't recall if the session tape for the UFO
theme was 4-track or 8-track. Although my memory tells me
that it was 4.

And there was never any intention to release a UFO soundtrack
album, so there were never any stereo mixes done. For some
of the music the original multi-track session tapes exist,
while in other cases only the final mix that Barry recorded
for himself exists, while in a few cases (e.g., some of
THE LONG SLEEP), nothing exists.

I know Pye studio 2 had multi-track facilities installed circa Feb/Mar
'69 so if the the UFO music was recorded after that date it could have
been recorded on multi-track. However, Pye were notoriously frugal,
and arch exponents of recycling session tape.

I also doubt anything exists from Pye studios as thier tape library
was at Mitcham south London and fell into disrepair in the mid '70.
When speaking with the tape Liberian, who was still working with
company until a few years ago. remembers when she started working
there, most of the tapes had fallen out the boxes, and it got so bad
it was like wading through
a sea of tape. She had just started to putting it all back in order.
When the building burnt down and all existing session tape was
destroyed, fortunatly the production tapes were kept at a seperate
location.

4 and 8 track is generally deemed as being different from
multi-track, maybe a misundertstaning here.

Any way we [and I in particular] are are in danger of dissapearing up
own arse on this one :-) so lets move on to something more
interesting.

Where did you come up with all of that UFO music history?
You know more about the soundtracks than most of us
know about the episodes!

Well, there's a log of Barry Gray's recording sessions
at this page:

http://www.tvcentury21.com/personnel/gray-schedule.html

This contains the dates & places for the various UFO
sessions. For example, THE LONG SLEEP was recorded
at Pye Studio 2 on November 11, 1970 from 2 to 6 pm,
with 8 musicians. And the UFO main theme was recorded
on October 16, 1969 at Barry Gray Studios from 9:30
am to 1:30 pm with 14 musicians.

Also, on the 4-track vs. 8-track... I checked my old
e-mails (from folks who know way more than I, but aren't
on this list), and the UFO title theme tape still exists
on a 4-track recording, so it can (and will) be
mixed into stereo for the upcoming Fanderson soundtrack
CD release.

Re: UFO Theme

My hope for the re-issue [if you can it a reissue :-)] will be for it
to include the mono mixes, because those are 'the' defintative
versions as recorded and mixed by the artist in 69/70 - it would be
sacriledge if not down right disrepectful not to.

I would imagine someone, probably Barry Gray spent a lot of time
getting the mono mix right and a lot of his artistry will be in that.
Mono recordings can realise a lot more detail if time is spent with
them. Also bear in my TV audio back then had quite a limited frequency
range and I suspect the mono mix would have been compressed to suit
and that output, and no doubt give the music the feel it has. To
carelessy expand the sound in a sloppy stereo mix could lose a lot of
the original intent.

Whilst a stereo mix will be interesting, it will be clearly contrived
[however well intentioned]and in my opinion should be clearly labelled
as the the UFO [2002 stereo remix]if included.
